Archival Paper Unique image in muted colors of a French car and motorcycle race. It is not clear if this is to be an auto race, a motorcycle race, or a combination of the two, as it is being put on by the Motorcycle division of the Automobile Club of the Haut Jura department of France. Sponsored by the Paris newspaper Le Petit Parisien, the most widely read paper in the world. The race covers 279 km, about 175 miles, in a loop, with expected lapse time of 7 hours, not counting the indicated stops in seven cities. Starting and ending in the town of Saint Claude, near the Swiss border. A fine design enhanced by unusual coloration. New York born Bridge, whose real name was Jean Barrez, was born in New York but spent most of his professional career as illustrator, humorist and poster designer and publisher in Paris, where he died in 1967. Archival Paper Perilously close to the edge this 1930 Rallye speeds towards Monte Carlo. The precarious mountain road adds a thrill to this poster - even if there are no such sheer precipices within sight of Monte Carlo. This design was well-liked: it was used two years later for the I 932 Rally, with a -2- tipped-on over the final digit of the prior race for its encore presentation. "Motobloc" Poster on Archival

Archival Paper Vintage Chevrolet automobile with General Motors building in background. An impressive art deco design in deep purple and sienna, against which the care appear almost like a pale phantom gliding by. Although the poster is meant for the French disrtibutor for general Motors, it's the GM building in Detroit that is used by the artist. Alfred Cardinaux, nephew of the better known Emil, was Veratile Decorative artist who learned his craft with zurich printer Wolfensberger, then worked form 1929 to 1932 for Editins d'Art in Paris. He also spent 20 years in Italy growing wine grapes and olives; In 1988, he suddenly decided to move to the U.S. and settled in Charlottesville, Virginia "Bugatti Automobile Train Poster" Poster on Archival

Archival Paper Train and car racing. In this poster for Bugatti's Alsatian distributor, Geri shows a T-57 and a Bugatti-made train whizzing past each other in opposite directions. Everything, including the Bugatti name, is rendered to communicate streaky speed. "52e Salon de l'Auto" Poster on Archival

Archival Paper Silhouette of speeding car finishes spelling ""Auto."" An original maquette for the 52nd Auto Show at Paris. It may have been submitted too late to be actually used on that occasion, but the strong visual impact of the design would have been a shame to waste, and it was actually printed for the 54th Show in 1967. Fix-Masseau himself claimed it was used for both expos, but like many artists, he was sometimes inclined to boast a little. "Audi Touring Car Poster" Poster on Archival

Archival Paper Lady with horse standing next to an Audi car. A bold design in off-beat colors is evidently an attempt to suggest that the horsey set favors the Audi. In the cited work, there is the additional text: ""Audi, der Rassewagen"" (Audi, the Thoroughbred Car). Witzel, an accomplished painter and illustrator, was a regular contributor to Jugend. Audi was the brainchild of auto pioneer August Horch, originally an engineer with Benz who went out on his own in 1899. "Phillips Autoradio" Poster on Archival

Archival Paper It's enough to make you want to grab some maracas and start shaking! Sophmoric comments aside, this spectacularly vivacious image definitely creates a rock and roll atmosphere for Philips and the at-one-time-optional item: the car radio.
